After completing the manuscript of her last (posthumously published) , "Between the Acts", Woolf fell into a depression similar that which she had earlier experienced. The of World War II, the destruction of her London home the Blitz, and the cool reception given to her of her late friend Roger Fry all worsened her condition she was unable to work. On 28 March 1941, Woolf drowned by filling her overcoat pockets with and walking into the River Ouse near her home. Woolf's was not found until 18 April. Her husband buried her cremated remains an elm tree in the garden of Monk's House, their in Rodmell, Sussex.

In her note, addressed to her husband, she wrote:

Dearest, I certain that I am going mad again. I feel we can't go another of those terrible times. And I shan't this time. I begin to hear , and I can't concentrate. So I am doing what seems the thing to do. You have given me the possible happiness. You have been in every all that anyone could be. I don't think two could have been happier till this terrible disease came. I can't any longer. I know that I am spoiling your , that without me you could work. And you will I . You see I can't even write this properly. I can't . What I want to say is I all the happiness of my life to you. You have been entirely with me and incredibly good. I to say that—everybody knows it. If anybody could have me it would have been you. Everything has gone from me but the of your goodness. I can't on spoiling your life any longer. I don't think people could have been happier than we have been. V.
